Staff Spotlight, Amy Laster
Tell us about yourself!
My name is Amy Laster (she/her). I am a Psychotherapist, LCMHC, as well as a Clinical Manager for Veritas Collaborative’s Triangle Outpatient Treatment Center in Durham, North Carolina. I have worked for Veritas for over four years.
What does a typical day look like for you at Veritas Collaborative?
It’s hard to describe a “typical” day (which is what I love so much about this work!), but my days involve a combination of clinical supervisions, direct patient care, various consultation meetings, milieu management, group facilitation, programming and scheduling management, connections with providers in the community, outreach efforts, and more.
What are you excited for this holiday season?
I really look forward to and always enjoy Thanksgiving! I love being with family and enjoying great food 🙂
What motivates you to show up for work each day?
My wonderful patients and colleagues foremost. I feel so lucky to work in a helping profession and to support people during some of the most challenging days of their lives. Seeing our patients move through challenges and enhance their quality of life is an incredible thing. It’s awesome to do this work alongside such wonderful peers who make the experience collaborative and fun.
What have our patients taught you?
Our patients have really shown me what strength is. When I reflect on how disruptive, consuming, and devastating eating disorders can be to a person’s life, it amazes me how hard our patients work to create change. To say I’m impressed by our patients is truly an understatement, but I am so impressed with how they move through the work in treatment. It’s especially inspiring when you consider the perspective that some primary components of our treatment are equivalent to facing your greatest fear numerous times a day.
What three words would you use to describe Veritas Collaborative?
Inclusive, competent, and caring.
What do you like to do when you aren’t working?
Spend time with friends and family, explore something new around town, and attend Carolina Hurricanes games (big fan!).
