Tell us about yourself!
My name is Andre Alston and I am the Executive Chef de Cuisine at Veritas Collaborative’s Child and Adolescent Hospital and Center in Durham, North Carolina. December 11, 2022 will make five years with the company.
Describe the career path that led you to Veritas Collaborative.
Before my role at Veritas Collaborative, I worked in the culinary industry for over 20 years in different types of settings, but I had never worked at an eating disorder treatment center. Working in a hospital setting has been so unique compared to my previous work.
What motivates you to show up for work each day?
My wonderful family motivates me to show up for work each day, as do my wonderful coworkers. Seeing patients get discharged is also motivating because it means we have done something to help them.
What have our patients and your colleagues taught you?
My colleagues and our patients have taught me that no one or nothing is perfect and that every day is a process, no matter what you are doing.
What one thing do you wish everyone knew about eating disorders?
You can overcome an eating disorder with the proper help and encouragement.
What piece of advice would you give to those struggling with eating disorders?
Just take it one day at a time and don’t get discouraged going through your journey because everyone is different.
What three words would you use to describe Veritas Collaborative?
Three words that describe Veritas Collaborative are caring, committed, and understanding.
If you could do another job just for a day, what would it be?
If I could do another job for a day, it would be a radio host or something in that setting.
What’s something you’re really proud of?
Being able to support my family and not having to struggle
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
I am shy if you don’t know me, but I open up once I am comfortable around you. I’m very silly at times!
