Staff Spotlight, Stephen Powell
Tell us about yourself!
My name is Stephen Powell, MD (he/him). I am a family medicine physician working in the adult unit at Veritas’ eating disorder treatment center in Atlanta, Georgia.
What does a typical day look like for you at Veritas Collaborative?
A typical day consists of morning team meetings, planning for the day, reviewing labs and charts, seeing patients, contacting families, attending administrative meetings, and learning new eating disorder medicine from literature.
What three words would you use to describe Veritas Collaborative?
Systematic, vibrant, and supportive.
What’s unique about treating eating disorders as compared to other conditions?
From a medical perspective, it’s about learning to listen more and doing less often. I partner with the patients on a safety plan while we focus on their eating disorder, and continue medical support for any condition outside their eating disorder.
What motivates you to show up for work every day?
I’m motivated by seeing patients make huge changes over relatively short periods and seeing them make future goals. My coworkers motivate me, as well.
What have our patients and your colleagues taught you?
What one thing do you wish everyone knew about eating disorders?
All eating disorders are unique. The diagnosis may be the same, but each patient has a story and requires different variations of support for recovery.
What piece of advice would you give to those struggling with food or eating disorders?
You’re not alone, and there are many options for support in the community.
If you could do another job just for a day, what would it be?
A Wall Street financier, complete with a power lunch.
What’s the strangest job you’ve ever had?
Working in urgent care—that type of quick care now feels foreign to me.
What’s something you’re really proud of?
I’m proud of the stable life and home I’ve built for myself.
What do you like to do when you aren’t working?
I like to be outside and enjoy my neighborhood in Atlanta, called Virginia-Highland.
What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
If I told you, then people would know. 🙂
What is one thing you hope to achieve in 2024?
Balance and gratitude.
