Recovering from an eating disorder requires intentional effort, and people often look for guidance on how to prioritize goals that support a positive recovery. One of the main priorities shown in research to enhance recovery is improving the body’s nutritional state. When an individual is engaged in eating disordered behaviors, they become poorly nourished. An inadequate nutritional state perpetuates these behaviors, which make treatment and recovery more difficult. Therapy and medication are also less effective in a malnourished state further highlighting the importance of targeting proper nutrition for a more positive outcome.

Patients with eating disorders often struggle with perfectionism, comparisons with peers, and a diminished sense of self-worth — which, in turn, hinder the creative process and a person’s ability to interact authentically with the world. Working together in expressive arts groups, patients form a creative community where they are empowered to overcome and share their struggles.

The most recent community-building creative project at Veritas Collaborative in expressive arts has been planting and caring for an herb and flower garden. As warmer weather approached this spring, patients planted a variety of flowers and herbs — snapdragons, marigolds, ipomoea, licorice plants, thyme, rosemary, and more. Group members discussed the importance of the plant’s root systems and witnessed the flowers reaching toward the sun as a symbol of hope. Every day the patients take turns watering the plants, observing the unique quality of each flower, and learning how the plants coexist in a mutually beneficial environment.

A few months before Veritas Collaborative opened, we had a small team, 29,000 square feet to up-fit, and a huge vision: A world in which all persons with eating disorders and their families have access to best-practice care and hold hope for a cure.

And, we didn’t take this vision lightly. After months of construction, preparation, recruiting, and training, we opened our doors to our first patients on June 4th, 2012, and brought our vision to life.
