What Is Residential Eating Disorder Treatment?

Residential eating disorder treatment is a specialized form of treatment for individuals who are struggling with eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder. At Veritas Collaborative, residential treatment involves a comprehensive and immersive approach to address the physical, psychological, and emotional aspects of the eating disorder.

In residential treatment at Veritas Collaborative, individuals live at a specialized facility designed to provide a supportive and therapeutic environment. These facilities are staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, dietitians, nurses, and therapists, who work together to develop and implement an individualized treatment plan.

The treatment in a residential setting typically involves a combination of medical care, nutritional counseling, individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy. At Veritas Collaborative, the aim of residential eating disorder treatment is to address the underlying factors contributing to the eating disorder, promote healthier eating behaviors, establish a stable weight, and support overall psychological well-being.

The residential setting offers round-the-clock supervision and support to ensure safety, monitor progress, and prevent relapse. It provides a structured routine, including regular mealtimes, therapeutic activities, and supervised exercise, to help individuals develop healthier habits and coping mechanisms.

The duration of residential treatment can vary depending on the severity of the eating disorder and the individual’s progress. It may range from a few weeks to several months. After completing residential treatment, individuals may transition to outpatient or intensive outpatient programs to continue their recovery journey.

Overall, residential eating disorder treatment at Veritas Collaborative offers a highly supportive and intensive approach to help individuals overcome their eating disorders and work towards long-term recovery. It provides a safe and nurturing environment for individuals to develop a healthier relationship with food, their bodies, and themselves.

Inpatient Treatment

Medical stabilization and expert care.

Inpatient care is structured, highly monitored, around-the-clock treatment that integrates medical care and both individual and group therapies. Inpatient care is suitable for adults who require daily medical interaction, are medically unstable, and/or are severely depressed or a danger to themselves as a result of their entrenchment in eating disorder behaviors. Veritas is one of the nation’s only eating disorder programs able to treat individuals who require this level of care.

Components of Inpatient Care

Inpatient care is our highest level of care and is often the first step in an individual’s recovery journey when medical stabilization is necessary.

  • Individually specialized support from a multidisciplinary team consisting of a medical provider, a psychiatrist, a registered dietitian, and a psychotherapist
  • Daily individual, group, and community-of-support programming, informed by dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Eating disorder-specific internal medicine support

PHP/IOP Eating Disorder Treatment for Children and Adolescents

Structured support for sustained recovery, designed for the unique needs of young people.

Veritas Collaborative’s partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP) for children and adolescents offer greater structure and support than non-intensive outpatient treatment but more independence than 24/7 care. With an individualized approach and focus on family and community-of-support involvement, PHP and IOP equip kids and teenagers to build a life in recovery alongside the support of a multidisciplinary care team.

Components of PHP Treatment for Children and Adolescents

Child and adolescent patients can admit directly into PHP as a first step in treatment or transition into PHP from residential care. This more intensive level of care is delivered by a compassionate, experienced multidisciplinary care team, who provide tailored interventions, supervision, and support to manage eating disorder symptoms and facilitate the development of coping skills. PHP programming takes place either in our state-of-the-art eating disorder treatment centers or from the comfort of home in a virtual treatment environment. Our PHP program offers patients a full day of treatment, 5-7 days a week, with the flexibility to participate in other everyday activities. Components of treatment include:

  • Skills-based group therapy
  • Therapeutic meals and snacks
  • Family therapy
  • Individual therapy sessions
  • Individual nutrition sessions
  • Expressive arts and movement therapy
  • Food skills groups
  • Psychiatry and medical services, as appropriate

Components of IOP Treatment for Children and Adolescents

IOP supports child and adolescent patients who are moving from a higher level of care. It can also be a starting point for patients who need more intensive support and intervention than what is offered in outpatient treatment. With a focus on relapse prevention and sustained recovery, this group-based program offers a balance between intensive support and the autonomy to practice recovery skills in real-world settings. We offer IOP programming both virtually and in-person at our treatment locations, for a minimum of 12 hours per week. Multidisciplinary IOP treatment at Veritas Collaborative includes:

  • Skills-based groups
  • Therapeutic meals
  • Family therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Individual therapy sessions
  • Individual nutrition sessions
  • Self-monitoring

Inpatient Eating Disorder Treatment for Children and Adolescents

Medical stabilization and expert care for young people struggling with an eating disorder.

Veritas Collaborative’s inpatient programming for eating disorders is structured, highly monitored, around-the-clock treatment that integrates medical care and both individual and group therapies. Inpatient care is suitable for children and adolescents who require daily medical interaction, are medically unstable, and/or have another significant co-morbid psychiatric condition (such as depression) whose symptoms may interfere with their participation in a lower level of care. Veritas is one of the nation’s only eating disorder programs able to treat young people who require this level of intensive care.

Components of Inpatient Eating Disorder Treatment for Children and Adolescents

Inpatient care is Veritas’ highest level of care and is often the first step in a child or adolescent’s recovery journey when medical stabilization is necessary. Our inpatient treatment provides 24/7 care and supervision, with a focus on interrupting and changing harmful eating disorder behaviors. At Veritas, our treatment approach is dynamic and personalized. Each child and adolescent in our inpatient programming receives an individualized, evidence-based treatment and discharge plan, supervised and carried out by our compassionate, qualified, and experienced multidisciplinary care teams. Inpatient treatment includes:

  • Individualized support from a multidisciplinary team consisting of a medical provider, a psychiatrist, a registered dietitian, and a child psychotherapist, all trained in providing specialty eating disorder care to child and adolescent populations
  • A focus on physical health, psychiatric health, and weight stabilization/restoration, as necessary
  • Daily individual and group, skills-based programming informed by dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Pediatric medical and dietary treatment of eating disorder
  • 24-hour nursing care
  • Regular supervision from therapeutic assistants
  • Education sessions
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), to learn how to tolerate uncomfortable emotions while building a life outside of disordered eating
  • Therapeutic meals and snacks with exposure to a variety of food experiences
  • Yoga and mindfulness therapies
  • Support for co-occurring conditions/other concerns
  • Integrated education
  • Family-based treatment (FBT), including family/community of support coping and relapse prevention skills
  • Expressive arts and yoga therapy
  • Coordination of discharge into the recommended level of care

The Role of Families in Child and Adolescent Inpatient Eating Disorder Treatment

If you are considering inpatient treatment for your child, you’re probably feeling a whole host of emotions—perhaps even helplessness. Starting treatment is a courageous step, and you have the opportunity to play an active role in your child’s recovery. At Veritas Collaborative, we find that children and adolescents respond better to eating disorder care when their family is involved. Research supports this, too. In fact, family-based treatment (FBT) is the leading evidence-based treatment for young people with eating disorders. That’s why we encourage parents, siblings, and extended family to participate in their loved one’s recovery. With the ongoing support of our FBT-trained professionals, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills to support your child’s renourishment, help curtail eating disorder behaviors, address and overcome any stumbling blocks, and bring awareness and resilience to potential triggers. FBT incorporates families as recovery allies across its three phases:

  1. Reducing eating disorder symptoms, ensuring nourishment, and restoring weight (when needed)
  2. Empowering the child to take an active role in their eating
  3. Cultivating a healthy identity separate from food and body

You can help your child regain balance. FBT is more than simply refeeding your loved one; it’s about viewing yourself as your child’s best resource for recovery and empowering you to help your child and family build a life worth living outside of the eating disorder. You are not to blame for your loved one’s eating disorder, nor are you helpless in their recovery from it.

To start learning more today, view our Resources for Families materials, explore our family-focused blogs and Peace Meal podcast episodes, and read our responses to common questions from families about Veritas Collaborative’s eating disorder treatment. Allow yourself some time to make sense of what you and your child are experiencing. Remember, you are never alone.

    Virtual Treatment

    Virtual Eating Disorder Treatment

We meet you where you are.

Veritas Collaborative’s virtual eating disorder treatment brings compassionate, evidence-based care to you. Patients and families receive the same structure and support offered in our in-person PHP, IOP, and OP programs as they do with our online virtual eating disorder treatment, ensuring a strong foundation for lasting recovery.

Call 855-875-5812 to get help with an eating disorder.

    Person looking online

Many of our partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and outpatient (OP) eating disorder treatment programs are available virtually, allowing individuals to access eating disorder treatment where they are, online. Patients connect with multidisciplinary providers and peers within a secure online environment.

Outpatient sessions that are not part of a PHP or IOP program are offered through our outpatient services center Gather Behavioral Health. Gather is made up of experienced therapists, dietitians, psychiatric providers, and medical providers who are dedicated to providing compassionate care to our patients. Gather offers individual, family, and group therapy and nutrition services for people of all ages and genders.

Our Patient Financial Services team will work with you to determine if your insurance provider covers these online eating disorder treatment services.

What is virtual PHP/IOP eating disorder treatment?

Virtual or online eating disorder treatment uses technology to deliver care to patients virtually. It allows you to connect to your treatment team by video to receive the structured care and support you would typically receive in person at one of our eating disorder treatment centers.

Like traditional intensive programming (PHP and IOP), virtual eating disorder treatment at Veritas Collaborative includes individual, group, and family therapy; therapeutic meal support; nutritional counseling; psychiatry sessions; and medical appointments, as appropriate. Your treatment plan will be personalized to fit your specific needs.

Prior to receiving virtual eating disorder treatment at Veritas Collaborative, you will attend an orientation that introduces your programming schedule and curriculum. Orientation staff will ensure you have access to the appropriate food and nutritional supplements, technology, and other resources you will need to participate in virtual treatment services.

Medical and safety needs will be assessed regularly to ensure you are receiving the level of care appropriate for you.

What is virtual outpatient (OP) eating disorder treatment?

Virtual or online eating disorder treatment uses technology to deliver non-intensive outpatient care to patients virtually. It allows you to connect to your treatment team by video to receive the structured care and support you would typically receive in person at one of our eating disorder treatment centers.

Like outpatient settings (OP), virtual OP eating disorder treatment at Veritas Collaborative may include individual, group, and family sessions, depending on your needs. OP services are provided through our outpatient services center, Gather Behavioral Health

What if I don’t have internet access at home?

Please let us know if you have any technology concerns (e.g., internet access) that would make it difficult for you to participate from home. We will provide internet for you on-site at Veritas Collaborative so that you can participate in virtual treatment services.

What are meals like over virtual treatment?

Therapeutic meals over virtual treatment involve our eating disorder recovery patients joining others at the table online. They have a short amount of time to prepare their meal prior to sitting with the group to eat. The group size at meals is smaller than in other virtual eating disorder treatment groups to allow for more interaction and support. Staff and peers in the group offer support at the meal so that patients can accomplish their meal-related treatment goals.

Our eating disorder treatment programs for adults are designed to help you discover that you are not your disorder. With a focus on whole-person care and communities of support, we strive to help individuals untangle their eating disorder behaviors and thoughts from their unique passions and goals to build a life worth living. We offer both individualized care and group treatment, all intending to equip individuals and their communities of support with the skills they need to continue recovery and thrive in school, work, home, and the community.

    Friends with arms around shoulder

    Whole-Person Care

We know an eating disorder can interfere with all aspects of your life, including relationships with family and friends, general health and well-being, and your ability to engage fully in school or career. We also know the demands of life mean there’s never a good time for treatment. For these reasons, we don’t offer a program that simply treats your symptoms. We work instead to meet you wherever you are in life, develop a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs, and provide you with the whole-person care most likely to lead to lasting recovery.

    Collaborative Community of Support

In addition to receiving individual therapy, your entire community of support will have the opportunity to learn the most helpful ways of supporting you—and each other—throughout the process of eating disorder recovery. We’ve developed a unique treatment experience that allows your community to be involved at all levels of care (to the extent you choose, of course), and includes engaging multi-family programs each weekend. The goal is to equip both you and your community of support with the tools you need to feel empowered on the road to recovery.

    Building A Life Worth Living

At Veritas Collaborative, we believe in partnering with each individual to help them improve their quality of life, re-engage with their community, and build a life worth living. An important part of that process is helping you discover that your eating disorder is not who you are. That requires great trust on both sides, and while we know trust is never given freely, we are committed to doing our part to earn yours.

As a comprehensive healthcare system, Veritas is one of the few eating disorder programs in the nation that offers a full continuum of care, from inpatient to outpatient. We know that access to the right treatment at the right time is the key to lasting recovery.

    Individualized Care

We recognize that every young person is truly one of a kind, and they respond best when their eating disorder treatment is as unique as they are. That’s why we develop an individualized care plan around each patient’s specific medical, nutritional, and emotional needs. It’s also why we assign children and adolescents their own multidisciplinary care team—including a medical provider, registered dietitian, and psychotherapist—that stays with them as they progress through treatment. This continuity of care helps build a trusting and comforting relationship between the care team, the young person, and the family. It also means that our team can more readily see what’s working best and adjust the care plan as needed. As with everything we do, the goal is to provide effective, personalized eating disorder care that leads to lasting recovery. At Veritas Collaborative, our teams have the clinical skills, compassionate approach, and specialty care experience to provide eating disorder treatment tailored to the unique needs of children and adolescents.

    Family Involvement

We believe families are a powerful tool in the eating disorder recovery process. Therefore, a large component of our child and adolescent eating disorder treatment programming facilitates family involvement. Our goal of family therapy and multi-family group programming is to help each individual and family tackle the eating disorder and thrive together in the home environment.

As a parent, the thought of seeking treatment for your child’s eating disorder can be overwhelming. It’s common to have questions or concerns, such as:

    • “How do I talk to my child about an eating disorder?”
    • “Is there something less invasive than eating disorder treatment that we can try right now?”
    • “How long does eating disorder treatment typically last?”

You’re not alone. We’re here to offer guidance and support during this confusing time. Explore frequently asked questions about Veritas’ child and adolescent eating disorder treatment.

    Integrated Educational Support

In inpatient and residential care, age-appropriate educational support is integrated directly into child and adolescent programming so that each young person can maintain academic progress on their path to recovery. Our education staff are creative in supporting each student’s educational plans and incorporating them into their treatment schedule. The primary goals of our academic support are to help our patients stay on track with school while getting the vital recovery support they need and to prepare each student for a smoother transition back to their typical school routine upon discharge. At Veritas, we see the big picture. We work to support the holistic development of children and adolescents—which means helping them progress in their education while they seek eating disorder treatment

    Nutrition and Culinary Support

Our approach to nutrition is designed to help children and adolescents and their families recognize and manage many common triggers for eating disorder behaviors. Unique features of our nutrition programming include individualized nutrition care with parent education and support, hands-on culinary experiences taught by skilled chefs, supervised restaurant outings, therapeutic-supported meals and snacks, and private dining rooms where patients and their families can learn to navigate mealtime challenges by planning, preparing, and eating meals together in a realistic homelike setting.
