Veritas Collaborative is pleased to invite you to a free continuing education series in Richmond, VA.

Veritas Collaborative provides evidence-based educational opportunities for healthcare providers and community members to raise awareness, inform early identification and treatment, and increase access to care for all persons diagnosed with eating disorders.

Audience

This is an introductory/intermediate level educational program designed for mental health professionals, dietitians, and other health care providers.


Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how gender and sexuality can affect an individual’s experience of their eating disorder.
  • Identify two variables that contribute to decreased treatment seeking in males.
  • Explain how a clinician’s effectiveness may be affected by an approach that does not take into account the patient’s identity.
  • Describe differences in prevalence estimates for eating disorder subtypes across varied racial and ethnic groups.
  • Identify two variables that influence eating disorders presentation in African American and Latino populations.
  • Explain variability in mental health service utilization across racial and ethnic groups.

Agenda

Eating Disorders, Body Image, and Gender Issues

This interactive program will inform providers about how gender and sexual identity impact eating disorders presentation. Providers will learn about the challenges faced by diverse populations as well as best practice for addressing the needs of individuals of various gender and sexual identities. In addition, discussion will explore how clinician biases may impact treatment.

Eating Disorders: a Multicultural Approach

Eating disorders presentation varies across different racial and ethnic groups. This presentation will examine socio-cultural influences and how they impact the development of eating disorders, disordered eating, and body dissatisfaction. Presenter will discuss the impact of socio-cultural variables on treatment seeking and service utilization.
