You’re Not Just a Picky Eater

Some people don’t like certain foods. Some people are allergic to things. Some people just prefer one texture of food to another, but that’s just a preference–they can eat anything. But that’s not you.

What we call ARFID, or Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, is not at all the same as simply being a picky eater. Some people with ARFID have trouble eating because of physical characteristics such as texture, smell, and appearance. Some people going through ARFID have trouble eating based on past negative experiences like choking or vomiting.

You might not even think of yourself as having an eating disorder because people suffering with ARFID aren’t avoiding food so they can look a certain way, or so they can keep their weight at a certain level.
