    Conditions Treated at Veritas Collaborative

    At Veritas, we understand that every eating disorder diagnosis is serious and worthy of treatment. That is why we provide comprehensive personalized care options for children, adolescents, and adults who are seeking help for these severe illnesses. Each patient is given a care plan that meets their individual needs and challenges.

    Veritas Collaborative provides treatment for the following eating disorders:

    • Anorexia nervosa: Characterized by an inability to eat enough food to maintain weight and/or growth trajectories, a fear of weight gain, and a distorted body image. At Veritas, programming for anorexia includes:
      • Restoring weight and nutritional status
      • Treating the physical ailments that result from malnourishment, such as electrolyte imbalances and cardiac issues
      • Identifying the underlying psychological issues that contribute to anorexia
      • Working through body image issues and establishing a realistic perception of body weight and shape
      • Developing coping skills for food anxieties and phobias
      • Education on strategies to prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery

    • Bulimia nervosa: Involves binge eating, which is followed by compensatory behaviors like purging and/or excessive exercise. At Veritas, programming for bulimia includes:
      • Establishing regular, balanced meal patterns
      • Treating the physical ailments that result from bulimia, such as dental problems and electrolyte imbalances
      • Developing healthier coping mechanisms to deal with stressors
      • Identifying the underlying psychological issues that contribute to bulimia
      • Learning how to self-monitor binge and purge behaviors
      • Developing a healthy self-esteem and body image
      • Developing skills that prevent relapse and promote long-lasting recovery

    • Binge eating disorder (BED): Marked by episodes of binge eating that are followed by a sense of lack of control, marked distress, and feelings of self-loathing and guilt. At Veritas, programming for BED includes:
      • Establishing regular, balanced eating patterns
      • Treating the physical ailments that result from BED, such as gallbladder disease (cholecystitis) and hypertension
      • Identifying the underlying psychological issues that contribute to BED
      • Developing mindful eating practices and an awareness of hunger and fullness cues
      • Developing self-compassion and positive body image
      • Strategies for preventing relapse and promoting long-lasting recovery

    • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID): Characterized by the inability to meet nutritional needs due to eating or feeding disturbances such as an apparent lack of interest in food, avoidance due to the sensory qualities of food, and/or concern over adverse consequences of eating food. At Veritas, programming for ARFID includes:
      • Exposure to fear foods and a broadening of the variety of foods eaten
      • Treating nutritional deficiencies and if necessary, promoting weight gain and maintenance
      • Addressing the underlying psychological issues contributing to the development and maintenance of ARFID
      • Education on coping skills for food anxieties and phobias
      • For young patients, education and support for caregivers in order to create a healthy mealtime environment
      • Education on strategies for preventing relapse and promoting long-lasting recovery

    • Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED): Characterized by eating disorder symptoms that cause significant distress, disruption to daily life, and/or medical consequences, but do not meet the full diagnostic criteria for the other diagnoses. At Veritas, OSFED programming includes:
      • Identifying and treating specific disordered eating behaviors, such as restricting, bingeing, and purging
      • Treating the physical ailments that result from the disordered behavior(s) of OSFED
      • Identifying the underlying psychological issues that contribute to the disordered behavior(s) that come with OSFED
      • Identifying emotional triggers and developing healthier coping methods to manage difficult emotions
      • Promotion of well-balanced, regular eating patterns
      • Encouragement of positive body image and self-compassion
      • Education on ways to prevent relapse and encourage long-term recovery

    • Co-occurring psychiatric and developmental disorders. At Veritas, we understand that an eating disorder cannot be treated successfully without addressing all the issues present, including co-occurring conditions like:
      • Anxiety
      • PTSD
      • Depression
      • ADHD
      • Substance-use disorder

    Our RTP facility specializes in exceptional age-appropriate care for people of all ages with eating disorders of all types. We have meticulously designed our 24/7 inpatient and residential programs to cater specifically to the needs of children, adolescents, and adults, understanding that each age group faces unique challenges on their path to recovery. With a personalized approach, we ensure you receive the highest level of support and expertise during your inpatient or residential treatment stay.

    Children and Adolescents

    • Age-appropriate multidisciplinary care: Adolescence is a critical time for physical, emotional, and mental development. Our tailored treatment plans for children and adolescents are designed with this in mind. We focus on promoting healthy growth, strong bones, and brain development, while also addressing the behavioral and psychological challenges of eating disorders. Our comprehensive approach incorporates evidence-based therapies such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and family-based treatment (FBT).

      In addition, our program integrates eating disorder-specific psychiatric, medical, and nutritional rehabilitation. Our culinary and nutritional programming is led by chefs and dietitians, and we also provide expressive art and movement therapy as part of our holistic approach to treatment.

    • Family involvement: Family involvement is the cornerstone of successful eating disorder recovery, especially for children and teens. Our inpatient and residential programs integrate family therapy and caregiver education to provide essential support and understanding. By creating a strong alliance between the family and our team, we empower your loved one to find their way back to health.

      • Academic support: Veritas offers tailored academic support to promote the educational pursuits of child and adolescent patients. Our RTP-Durham location collaborates with the Durham School District to provide grant-funded hospital education programs, ensuring patients in our 24/7 intensive programs receive necessary academic support.


      Our adult program at our RTP-Durham, NC location provides specialized inpatient treatment for individuals 18 and older struggling with eating disorders.
